How do I open Bonyan on my company's domain?
What you will do
You open Bonyan on your company's domain, such as yourcompany.com, and not on the Bonyan address. You enter your domain in Settings. The screen shows the record to set at your domain provider, then follows the pointing and issues the security certificate on its own.
This works with a main domain such as yourcompany.com, or a subdomain such as erp.yourcompany.com.
Before you start
- You need a domain you own, and access to its DNS settings at your provider. If you don't have a domain, click Register one with ITPlus under the field.
- A main domain opens your system instead of what it shows now. If your company website is on it and you want to keep it, connect a subdomain such as
erp.yourcompany.com. - Each account has one domain. To connect another, remove the current one first.
- Your company email does not move to Bonyan. It stays with its provider, and the screen shows you what keeps it working.
Steps
Connect your domain
- Click Settings in the sidebar, then the Custom domain tab.
- Enter your domain in Domain, then click Connect. The status "Waiting for DNS" appears with what to set at your provider.
Do the email steps first, if they appear
If your company email depends on the main domain, a box appears: "Before you switch your domain: do these steps first". Don't skip it. Switching before these steps stops your email.
- Do the steps at your domain provider in the order shown. Each value has Copy beside it.
- Click Refresh status after two minutes. A finished step is marked "Done" or disappears, and when all are finished the box disappears.
Set the domain record
Set the record as the screen shows it, with the same value:
- Main domain: edit the existing A record of the domain (@). Don't add a second one.
- Subdomain: add a CNAME record.
If a "Delete these old records" list appears, delete what is in it at your provider. The domain is not activated while they remain.
Wait for activation
There is nothing to do here, and you can leave the page. The system checks the pointing on its own, and the status changes to "Issuing certificate", then "Active". This usually takes minutes after you set the record, and can take longer if the change is slow to appear at your provider. Click Refresh status to see the latest status.
Remove the domain
- Click Remove domain. The question "You'll go back to the Bonyan address. Sure?" appears.
- Click Yes, remove, or Cancel to go back.
- Return your domain's record at your provider to its previous value. If it keeps pointing to us, visitors to your domain see a security error.
What changes after you save
- After activation: your system opens on your domain with the same data, and "Certificate valid until" appears with its date. The certificate renews automatically.
- www: if
wwwfollows your domain, it opens your system too and sends visitors to your main domain. If not, the screen tells you what to add. - The Bonyan address: it keeps working as it is.
- Signing in: the first time you open your domain you sign in on it, because a sign-in on the Bonyan address does not carry over.
- Mail apps: if your devices use your domain as the mail server, change it to the name the screen shows.
- Calendar and contacts: if you sync them from your hosting, syncing may stop after you switch the main domain. Check with your hosting provider.
Permission you need
The Custom domain tab is for the account owner alone, who is the first admin on the account. It does not appear to anyone else, even another admin. There is no permission to grant for this tab in the permission levels.
If you can't find the button or activation failed
- You don't see the Custom domain tab: you are not the account owner.
- "We're still waiting for your domain to point to us": check the record at your provider and compare its value with the screen. If a delete list appears, delete what is in it.
- "Your domain wasn't pointed to us within 72 hours of linking it": set the record, then click Retry. A new period starts.
- "Your company email is down right now": you switched the domain before the email steps. Do them at your provider right away.
- "We couldn't issue a security certificate for your domain": make sure your domain points only to us, then click Retry. Don't repeat removing and connecting too often: each connection issues a certificate, and certificates have a weekly limit per domain.
- "This domain, or the same domain with or without www, is reserved for another account": if you own the domain, contact support.
- "You already have a connected domain": remove the current one first.
- "Suspended — routing lost": your domain no longer points to us. Check the record at your provider.
- Visitors see a security error after you remove the domain: your domain's record still points to us. Return it to its previous value.
- A notice that your subscription has ended: you can see your domain but can't change it until you renew.
